WHAT I'VE LEARNED
COLLABORATIVE STORYTELLING
The secret ingredient to most 5 star recipes is love. No Michelin star chef is haphazardly throwing together ingredients, slapping them on a plate, and hoping for the best – at least, that’s what watching too much Hell’s Kitchen has taught me. They take the time and care to understand the elements going into their dish and how the flavors can blend and evolve. How will it make you feel when you experience that first bite? What lasting impression will it leave?
To me, design is no different. Before I can "serve the meal," I have to understand the brand and define the overall story we want to tell. Human connection is the key to user experience, and how those users interact with the design is the core of any brand’s foundation. It’s a team effort. So put in the hard work, do it the right way, and never forget the love.
CONSTRUCTIVE PUSH BACK
As designers, sometimes we can be pushed to the breaking point. Everything is running smoothly, you feel confident about the design direction, and then…you receive that email. You know the one where the client rethinks everything and has so many wonderful ideas that are a dumpster fire waiting to happen? So, what do you do?
This is where you “constructively” push them down the….just kidding. You speak up! I want the client to be happy, of course, but the most important thing at the end of the day is the final product. Over time, I found my voice and learned to build client trust by fighting on behalf of the design and pushing boundaries for the best end result. Who doesn’t love a happy ending?!
